In this article we will show you exactly how to unmerge cells in Google Sheets. We cover how to unmerge a selection of cells or all cells. Just follow the simple steps below:
An example dataset was created for the purpose of demonstration. Click here to access the sample sheet and follow along at home.
Click on the merged cell highlighting it.
From the Format menu in the top tool-bar select Merge cells followed by Unmerge.
The merged cells are unmerged. We can see in our example that the previously merged cell is separated and the contents appear in the top left-most cell.
We must first select any merged cell in the dataset.
Press Ctrl + A in Windows (cmd + A in Mac) to expand the selection to the full data set, with the Ctrl (Cmd) key held down - press A again which will select all of the cells in the sheet.
From the top tool-bar click Format followed by select Merge cells and then Unmerge from the side-menu.
We can now see that all the previously merged cells in the sheet have been separated and now display individually, Any contents appear in the top left-most cell.
Select the merged cell you wish to separate in your dataset.
In the top tool-bar notice the merge button.
By selecting the drop down arrow next to the merge button, a shortcut menu will be displayed containing several options.
From the merge shortcut menu select Unmerge, the merged cells will become unmerged and you will be able to see each individual cell. Any cell contents appear in the top left-most cell from the selection.
