Google Sheets Pixel Art refers to a creative use of Google Sheets to create images or designs pixel by pixel. Instead of using the platform solely for data analysis, users can manipulate the cells in a Google Sheets document as individual pixels to create digital artworks.
Pixel art in Google Sheets is achieved by changing the background color of each cell to simulate a pixel in a larger image. Here’s how to do it:
Choose a tool or software to pixelate your image. This process simplifies the image into a grid of color blocks which makes it suitable for Google Sheets. For our example, we used a pixelation tool to convert the image into a grid format. Click "Upload Image" and download your pixel art image for reference.
This is what the downloaded pixel art looks like.
Prepare your Google Sheets canvas by adjusting the cells into a square grid format. To make each cell square, select all (by clicking the square between A and 1), then drag the row heights or column widths so each cell appears as a square. This adjustment ensures your "pixels" are square which matches typical pixel art dimensions.
You might want to adjust your zoom level in Google Sheets to make it easier to view and edit the cells. You can select the three dots icon in your browser to adjust the zoom level.
Match the colors from your pixel art to the cells in Google Sheets using a color picker tool. For this tutorial, we used the color picker tool from Canva.
With the pixel art as your guide, use the color picker to select the exact custom colors for your spreadsheet. Apply these colors to each cell to replicate the image accurately.
This is how the pixel art should look in Google Sheets.
