In this article, we will show you how to create a petition in Google Forms in just a few clicks. We also provide a basic template for you to get started. Simply follow the steps below.
Google Forms doesn't natively support the creation of a petition in the traditional sense since it's primarily a tool for surveys, quizzes, and data collection. However, you can use Google Forms to gather signatures for a petition by following these steps:
Fill in the form title with the name of your petition and a brief description that outlines the purpose of the petition. Be clear and concise to immediately inform signers what they are supporting.
Let's say, for example, you want to create a petition on Google Forms to save your local park. The title can be: "Save Our Local Park."
Click the "Untitled Question" box to edit it. A dropdown menu will also appear next to the question. Select "Short answer" as the question type.
Tip: Toggle on the "Required" option to ensure every respondent provides their name.
In the Settings tab, under the Responses section, toggle on "Limit to 1 response" to ensure each signature is unique. This will require signees to log in with a Google account.
Under the "Presentation" section, you can also customize the confirmation message by clicking "Edit" to thank respondents for signing and provide any follow-up information.
Following our example, we can write: "Thank you for adding your signature to save Greenfield Park! Every voice counts, and yours has been heard. Please share this petition with friends and family to help our cause." Don't forget to click "Save."
Once your form is complete, click on the "Send" button to share your petition via email, get a shareable link, or obtain the code to embed it on a website.
As signatures are collected, check the "Responses" tab at the top to monitor the list of signatories. You can also click on "Link to sheets" to view the responses in a spreadsheet format.
Note: Be mindful of the privacy of the information you are collecting. Make sure to follow applicable data protection laws and inform signees about how their data will be used.
Below is a basic template outline you can follow to create a petition on Google Forms. Remember that you will need to customize the text to suit your specific petition. We have also added a simple Data Privacy note you can modify.
