In this article, we will show you how to use the Google Forms word limit and Google Forms character limit features. Simply follow the process below.
Follow the process below to set a word limit in your Google Forms questions to keep responses brief and to the point.
Find the specific question in your Google Form where you want to enforce a word limit. This can be an existing text-based question, or you can add a new question.
For the selected question, click on the bottom-right corner where you see three vertical dots. From the menu, choose 'Response validation'. This will allow you to set rules for the answers.
In the 'Response validation' settings, select 'Regular expression' and then 'Matches'.
Enter the formula `^\w+(\s+\w+){0,9}$` to set a limit of 10 words. To adjust the limit, change the number '9' to one less than your desired word count.
Below the regular expression field, type in an error message that will appear if the response exceeds the word limit. For example, "Please limit your response to 10 words" clearly informs the respondent of the limit.
Click on the eye icon to preview your form.
Test the word limit to ensure it works as expected. Changes in Google Forms are automatically saved.
Follow the process below to set a character limit for responses in Google Forms to control the length of answers provided by users.
Identify the question in your form where you want to apply a character limit. You can either use an existing question or add a new one specifically for this purpose.
In the selected question, click the three dots in the bottom-right corner and select 'Response validation'. This feature allows you to restrict the length of the responses.
In the validation settings, under 'Length', choose 'Minimum' or 'Maximum' and then set the number of characters you want to allow. For example, setting a maximum of 100 will restrict responses to 100 characters or less.
Provide a custom error message in the field below the character count setting. This message should guide respondents, such as "Response must be under 100 characters."
Use the preview option (eye icon) to test your form. Ensure that the character limit is working correctly. Changes in Google Forms are automatically saved.
