In this article, we explain what a checkbox grid is and show you how to use it in Google Forms in just a few clicks. Simply follow the steps below.
A checkbox grid in Google Forms is a question type that allows respondents to select multiple answer options (checkboxes) across a grid of rows and columns. This type of question is useful when you want to gather data about multiple items in relation to different categories.
For example, a checkbox grid can be used to ask attendees which days and times they are available for a series of events, where the rows could be the days of the week and the columns could be time slots.
You should see a floating toolbar on the right side of your form. Click on the "+" button to add a new question. By default, it might add a multiple-choice question.
Click on the dropdown menu on the right side of the new question to change the question type. Select "Checkbox grid" from the list of question types.
Enter your question in the text field at the top. Fill in the rows and columns with the options you want.
Rows could represent the items or subjects of the question. Columns would typically represent the categories or options for each item. You can add more rows and columns using the "Add Row" or "Add Column" buttons.
Example: Let’s say you’re organizing a series of workshops and you want to find out which topics your attendees are interested in, and whether they are beginner or advanced in those topics. You can use a checkbox grid to collect this information. Here’s how to set it up:
If necessary, you can require a response in each row. Simply toggle the setting on at the bottom right of the question box.
You have the option to limit users to choose only one option per column in the grid as well. At the bottom-right corner of the checkbox grid question box, you'll see a three-dot menu. Click on this to access additional settings for the checkbox grid.
Select the option: "Limit to one response per column" in the additional settings menu.
Click the eye icon at the top of the screen to preview your form. Go through your form as if you were a respondent to make sure that the checkbox grid behaves as expected.
